The elevator is a specific kind of “room”;. For a short moment
people are very intimite together, who will probably never see each other
again. You can see and smell every detail, you can hear every sound. It takes quiet a while to get to the 30th
floor. So the habbit in an elevator developed a very specific form.
Many people are claustrophobic, others try to ignore the people around.
Beeing alone, cut out of the normal life of the outer metropole, people start
to do strenght things, while not beeing watched.
In specific I created three version of elevators.
The first I concentrate on the claustrophobic element and make it more
intense. It happens through the color pink, which invents the light
situation, the atmosphere. And I overlap the layers of the tape at the back
wall and stretch it out towards the front wall again. This gives the
impression, the elevator slants towards the back.
The second elevator I “open up” towards the ceiling as well towards the floor by creating a tape drawing which is optical widening the
view as well as by the colors. And I have a mirror at the back wall which
douples the room as well as the tape drawings. The ceiling tape is
enlightened from the inside and shiny.
The third elevator I install an action. People take their favourite color of
tape offered in four colors red, pink, green, yellow. They tape it onto the
place on the floor, towards their standpoint in the elevator. A landscape of
standing appears during this evening.
The installation/action “Moving Standpoint I + II + III” took
part at the exhibition 7hours during the Night of the Museum, Berlin, 2000
for 24 hours.
